Berlin isn't a pretty old town but a sprawl of very different neighbourhoods, each with its own feel. You come for the history, from the Wall to the Reichstag, and stay for the museums, parks, cafés and street food.
Makan
- Döner kebabBerlin's Turkish community made the döner sandwich the city's favourite fast food, and there's a stall on almost every corner.Map ↗
- CurrywurstSliced sausage under curry ketchup, Berlin's own snack; it's usually pork, though some stalls sell beef or halal versions.Map ↗
- PfannkuchenJam-filled doughnuts, which the rest of Germany calls Berliner.Map ↗
Things to do
- Berlin Wall MemorialA stretch of the Wall at Bernauer Strasse, with the death strip and a watchtower kept as they were, and the stories of those who tried to escape.Map ↗
- East Side GalleryThe longest surviving stretch of the Wall, painted with murals along the Spree.Map ↗
- Museum IslandFive museums on an island in the river; the Neues Museum has the bust of Nefertiti. The Pergamon Museum is closed until June 2027.Map ↗
- Reichstag and Brandenburg GateThe parliament's glass dome is free to visit if you register online ahead, a short walk from the gate.Map ↗
- Tempelhofer FeldA disused airport turned into a giant park, where people cycle, skate and picnic on the old runways.Map ↗
Good to know
- Sonnenallee in Neukölln is lined with Arab bakeries and grills, and Kreuzberg is full of Turkish places, so halal food is easy.
- Register online for the Reichstag dome a few days ahead and bring your passport.
- Buy an ABC ticket for the airport; the cheaper AB ticket doesn't reach BER.
