Wooden wharf lanes, mountain viewpoints and boats heading into the fjords.
- Best time
- May–September has long days and the most fjord boats. Rain is part of the deal in every season; winter is darker, wetter and sometimes icy.
- How long
- 2–3 days, plus a fjord trip
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop, usually via Amsterdam, about 17–19 hours all in. The light rail takes about 45 minutes from the airport to the centre. Norway is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Bergen is a harbour city wedged between seven mountains, with the wooden warehouses of Bryggen lining the wharf. It rains a lot, but it's a lovely city and the gateway to the western fjords.

Good to know
- Bring a rain jacket whatever the forecast, and go up Fløyen when the cloud lifts.
- Day cruises from Bergen see the nearby fjords; the famous Nærøyfjord and Sognefjord need a longer day, such as the Norway in a Nutshell route.
- Halal is limited to a handful of kebab and South Asian places in the centre; the fish market is the easy alternative.
