bengoh dam
A boat across a forest reservoir to jungle waterfalls and a Bidayuh hill village near Kuching.
- Best time
- March to September has less rain and calmer water. December to February is wettest: the falls are fuller, but the trails get slippery and crossings can be called off. In long dry spells the water drops and boats may land somewhere else.
- How long
- 1 day, or 2 with a homestay night
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Kuching (about 1 hour 45 minutes), then drive about an hour south to the jetty on the reservoir. The boat across takes 20–45 minutes depending on where you're headed. Kuching operators run day trips with pickup, boat and guide.

The reservoir behind Bengoh Dam, about 50 km south of Kuching, fills a valley in the Bengoh hills. A boat takes you across the lake to trails leading to Susung and other waterfalls, and to Kampung Sting, a Bidayuh village of bamboo bridges on the hill above the water. Most people go with a local guide, who sorts out the boat.

Good to know
- Go with a guide or operator. The boat, trail and village visit all need arranging, and you can't drive to the falls.
- Pack swimwear, shoes with grip and a dry bag for your phone on the boat.
- Homestay meals may include pork. Tell your host or operator if you need halal food.
