Titanic shipyards, a weekend food market and street murals with stories behind them.

Best time
May–September has the longest days for the waterfront and walking tours, with July–August the busiest. November–February is damp and dark by four, and Titanic Belfast and the Ulster Museum are good wet-day picks.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop, usually via London, to Belfast City Airport, about 17–19 hours all in; it's about 10 minutes from the centre. Or fly to Dublin and take the train or coach north, about 2 hours. Northern Ireland runs on UK time: 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Belfast built the Titanic, and its old shipyards are now the city's biggest sight. Its recent history is part of a visit too, best heard from a local guide among the murals and peace walls.

Makan

  1. Soda and potato breadThe two griddle breads of an Ulster fry. The rest of the fry is mostly bacon and sausage, so order the breads on their own.Map ↗

Things to do

  1. Titanic BelfastA building shaped like ships' bows, beside the slipways where the Titanic was built, telling its story from shipyard to seabed.Map ↗
  2. St George's MarketA Victorian market hall of food stalls, crafts and live music, open Friday to Sunday.Map ↗
  3. Black taxi or walking tourA local guide takes you through the murals and peace walls of the Falls and Shankill roads and explains the Troubles.Map ↗
  4. Botanic Gardens and Ulster MuseumA Victorian palm house and a free museum of art, history and nature beside Queen's University.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Halal is manageable: there's a cluster of halal places and grocers around Queen's University, Botanic Avenue and the Lisburn and Ormeau roads.
  • Titanic Belfast takes a good half-day; book a time slot in summer.
