Roman baths, honey-coloured terraces and warm buns beside the River Avon.

Best time
April–September is best for walking the crescents and the river, with July and August the busiest. November–February is cold and dark by late afternoon, though a Christmas market fills the streets around the Abbey in late November and December.

Bath is small enough to walk end to end: Roman baths below street level, golden Georgian terraces above and the River Avon running through. It's an easy day from London, but staying the night means a soak in the spa after the day-trippers leave.

Things to do

  2. Thermae Bath SpaYou can't swim in the Roman Baths, but you can here: a rooftop pool filled with the same spring water, looking out over the city.Map ↗
  3. Royal Crescent and the CircusTwo great sweeps of honey-coloured Georgian houses a short walk apart. No. 1 Royal Crescent is set up as a Georgian home.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Roman Baths tickets are timed, and weekend slots sell out, so book a day or two ahead.
  • Several Indian, Bangladeshi and Middle Eastern restaurants in the centre serve halal meat, and Bristol's Stapleton Road, 15 minutes away by train, has far more.
