- Roughly February to May, when seas are generally calmer. Crossings can be rough during the year-end monsoon.

- Fly from KL to Kota Kinabalu (about 2.5 hours) and drive about 3 hours to Kudat. Public boats run from Kudat to Karakit, the island's main town, in about 1–2 hours depending on the boat.

Banggi is the largest island wholly in Malaysia, off Sabah's northern tip in the Tun Mustapha Marine Park. It's home to the Bonggi people and a scattering of fishing villages, with little in the way of tourist facilities, which is exactly why some people go.

Good to know
- Banggi lies within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone). Check current travel advisories before you go and avoid boat trips after dark.
