The capital of Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra, once the seat of a powerful sultanate and known as the Porch of Mecca. The city was devastated by the 2004 tsunami and has since been rebuilt; its memorials, its grand mosque and its coffee culture are what draw visitors.

Good to know

  • Aceh is the only Indonesian province that applies Islamic law. There's no alcohol, everyone is expected to dress modestly, and women need to cover their hair inside the mosque.
  • Shops and cafés close for Friday prayers.
