banda islands

The original spice islands: nutmeg groves, old Dutch forts and coral gardens.

Best time
The calmest seas usually come around March to April and October to December. From about June to August, strong winds make the sea rough and boats can be cancelled.
How long
4–5 days
Getting there
Fly from KL to Jakarta or Makassar, then on to Ambon. From Ambon, fast boats take about 6 hours to Banda Neira, and larger Pelni ships run less often. Small planes fly sometimes but are hard to rely on.

A cluster of small volcanic islands in the Banda Sea, once the world's only source of nutmeg and mace. The bloody fight for that spice left Dutch forts, old colonial houses and nutmeg groves that are still farmed today. The reefs are in very good shape, and few people make the long trip out.

Good to know

  • Boats and flights are often delayed or cancelled. Leave spare days at both ends.
  • ATMs are scarce. Bring enough cash from Ambon.
  • Gunung Api is steep and loose near the top. Take water and wear proper shoes.
