bamberg
A town hall over the river, half-timbered houses and a cathedral hill above old lanes.
- Best time
- May–June and September–October are best for walking the hills. July–August is busier; December adds a Christmas market, while January–February is cold and quiet.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- Lufthansa flies direct from KL to Frankfurt from late October 2026, about 13 hours; otherwise it's one stop via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul. Trains from Frankfurt airport take about 3 hours, with a change. Germany is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Bamberg's old town, spread over seven hills and an island in the Regnitz, came through the war almost untouched. It's a UNESCO-listed tangle of half-timbered houses, Baroque churches and a town hall built in the middle of the river.

Good to know
- The station is about 20 minutes' walk from the old town.
- Halal meat is hard to find in Bamberg, and the brewery taverns cook with pork and beer, so carp and bakery food are the easy options.
