A high, wide valley in the central highlands of Papua, home to the Dani and neighbouring peoples. There's no road in, only flights to the town of Wamena, and outside town life still follows the rhythm of sweet potato gardens, pigs and round thatched huts. Most visitors come to trek between villages or to see the Baliem Valley Festival.

Good to know

  • Papua's highlands see periodic unrest. Check your government's travel advice and local news before booking, and travel with a reputable local guide.
  • You may need a police travel permit (surat jalan) for the highlands. Rules change, so ask your guide or operator.
  • Ask before taking photos of people. Some will ask for a small payment, so agree first.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
