Baku puts a walled old city beside oil-boom boulevards and a long Caspian waterfront. A few days cover palaces and tea houses, plus a trip into the dry, smouldering landscape outside the city.

Good to know
- Meat in local restaurants is halal as a rule, though alcohol is widely served.
- The mud volcanoes are up a rough track from the Gobustan rock-art site, and drivers in old Ladas wait to take visitors up.
- Baku is nicknamed the City of Winds, so bring a layer for the seafront.
