Ba Be Lake, three linked lakes and Vietnam's largest natural lake, sits among limestone mountains and forest in the far north. Days here are slow: boat trips to caves and waterfalls, cycling between villages and nights in Tay stilt houses.

- Halal food is hard to find in the mountains. Tell your homestay about any dietary needs ahead of time.
