arugam bay

Long right-hand surf breaks, sandy lanes and lagoon birds on Sri Lanka's east coast.

Best time
May–September is surf season and the liveliest time in town. October is in between, and November–January brings rain and a very quiet town, with many places shut.
How long
3–5 days
Getting there
Fly direct from KL to Colombo (about 3.5 hours), then it's about 7–8 hours by road, so it fits best into a longer loop around the island. Sri Lanka is 2.5 hours behind KL.

Arugam Bay is a small surf town on the east coast: one sandy main road, board racks outside every guesthouse and a slow rhythm between sessions. Even without a board, there are lagoon trips, elephants nearby and long empty beaches, though getting here takes most of a day.

Things to do

  2. Baby PointA gentler wave near the main break, where the surf schools teach.Map ↗
  3. Pottuvil LagoonBoat trips through the mangroves, with birds, monitor lizards and sometimes elephants on the bank.Map ↗
  4. Elephant RockA walk south along the sand to a big boulder with views down the coast; elephants sometimes graze below it.Map ↗
  5. Kumana National ParkA quieter, bird-rich park about an hour south, with elephants and the odd leopard.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Pottuvil, just up the road, is a Muslim town where halal food is standard; the bay's cafés serve mixed menus.
  • Main Point breaks over reef and isn't for learners; the surf schools take beginners to the softer spots.
  • The lagoons have crocodiles, so swimming is for the sea only.
