almaty
Snowy peaks above leafy streets, a busy food bazaar and cable cars into the mountains.
- Best time
- May–June and September are good for the city and lower mountain walks. July–August is hot in town but best for high trails; December–March brings skiing, cold air and smog.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- About 8 hours direct from KL on AirAsia X. The airport is about 30–45 minutes from the centre. Kazakhstan is 3 hours behind KL, and Malaysians can stay 30 days without a visa.

Almaty is Kazakhstan's biggest city, a grid of tree-lined streets with snowy peaks right behind it. You can eat at the Green Bazaar in the morning and be up at Shymbulak by lunchtime.

Good to know
- Many cafés display a halal sign, and Kazakh cooking leans on lamb, beef and horse; Russian-style places may serve pork.
- Charyn Canyon is about 3 hours each way, so give it a day of its own.
- Take a warm layer up to Shymbulak, even in summer.
