algarve
Golden cliffs, sandy islands and grilled fish in Portugal's sunny south.
- Best time
- May–June and September–October are warm and less crowded. July–August are hot and packed; winter is mild and often sunny, but the sea is cold and boat trips get cancelled.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Lisbon, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul (about 17–19 hours all in), then take the train to Faro, about 3 hours, or a short flight. Portugal is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

The Algarve is Portugal's sunny south coast, with golden cliffs and sea arches in the west and sandy lagoon islands in the east. Pick a base or two rather than trying to see it all.

Things to do
- Ponta da PiedadeGolden sea stacks, arches and grottoes near Lagos, seen from clifftop paths or a small boat.Map ↗
- Benagil caveA sea cave with a hole in its roof. Boats and guided kayaks go in, but landing on the beach inside and swimming in are banned.Map ↗
- TaviraA gentle old town of white houses, churches and an old bridge, with island beaches nearby.Map ↗
- Ria FormosaA lagoon of channels, salt pans and sandbars; little ferries run out to the barrier-island beaches.Map ↗
- Sagres and Cape St VincentThe windswept southwestern corner of Europe, with sheer cliffs and a lighthouse.Map ↗
Good to know
- Lagos and Tavira are well over an hour apart, so stay in the west for cliffs or the east for islands.
- Halal meat is limited, so grilled fish does the heavy lifting; Albufeira and Faro have the most kebab and Indian places.
