- June–September is best, with the lake warmest for swimming in July–August, when the town also fills with visitors from the Gulf. January–March is ski season; April and November are quiet, with lifts shut for maintenance.

- Fly with one stop to Munich, usually via Singapore, Dubai or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. The train from Munich airport takes about 4 hours, changing at Salzburg. Austria is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Zell am See is a small town on a lake ringed by mountains, with the Schmittenhöhe slopes rising straight from its back streets. Next door, Kaprun has the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, so you can do lake and snow in one day.
