Houseboat nights, fishing trips and forested shores in Kedah's inland lake country.
- Best time
- December to March is usually driest. The water drops in long dry spells and rises after the rains; September and October are the wettest months.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- About 5.5–6 hours' drive from KL: the North–South Expressway to Alor Setar, then east through Kuala Nerang. From Alor Setar it's about an hour.

A big reservoir in the forested hills of Padang Terap, close to the Thai border. The lakeside resort that once drew the crowds closed in 2010, so today it's a quieter trip for anglers and families: a boat out to the islands, a night on a houseboat and freshwater fish for dinner.

Where to stay
On a houseboat for the full experience, or in Alor Setar if you'd rather do it as a long day trip.
Good to know
- Book the boat or houseboat before you drive out; there's little walk-in business at the lake.
- Wear a life jacket on every boat trip, and bring insect repellent.
