Sydney is built around its harbour, and the everyday ferries double as the best sightseeing. Mix the Opera House and the bridge with beach suburbs, clifftop walks and long café breakfasts.

Good to know
- Halal is easy: Lakemba and Auburn are full of Lebanese and Turkish places, and the city centre has plenty of halal Malaysian and Indonesian restaurants.
- Tap on and off with your bank card on trains, buses and ferries; there's no need to buy a travel card.
- Swim between the red and yellow flags. Sydney's surf beaches have strong rips.
