split

Everyday streets inside a Roman palace, a busy seafront and ferries to Dalmatian islands.

Best time
May–June and September–October are warm, good for the town and island trips. July–August is hot, with crowded ferries; winter is quieter, with fewer island connections.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
Fly to Split with one stop, usually via Istanbul, or change in Zagreb for a short domestic flight; allow about 17–20 hours all in. Airport buses reach the bus station beside the ferry port in about 30–45 minutes. Croatia is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Split's old town grew up inside the walls of a Roman emperor's palace, so people still live, shop and drink coffee among 1,700-year-old columns. Add the seafront, nearby beaches and ferries to the islands, and it's an easy base for the Dalmatian coast.

Things to do

  1. Diocletian's PalaceNot a ruin but a neighbourhood: homes, shops and cafés fill the Roman walls and gates.Map ↗
  2. The Peristyle and cathedralThe palace's columned courtyard, beside the emperor's mausoleum, now the cathedral, with a bell tower to climb.Map ↗
  3. MarjanA wooded hill on the peninsula west of town, with steps up to viewpoints and small swimming coves below.Map ↗
  4. The RivaThe palm-lined seafront promenade, for coffee and watching the ferries come and go.Map ↗
  5. BačviceThe sandy town beach, where locals play picigin, a splashy game of keeping a small ball in the air.Map ↗

Good to know

  • The palace lanes are free to wander; the cellars, cathedral and bell tower have their own tickets.
  • In summer, book island catamarans ahead, as queues at the harbour are long.
  • Halal food is scarce in town, though a few hotels in the Split area are halal-certified; grilled fish is the easy option.
