port douglas
Reef boats, a long palm-fringed beach and a relaxed base north of Cairns.
- Best time
- May–October is drier and less humid, though the trade winds can make reef crossings choppy. November–April is hot and wet, with box jellyfish in the water and cyclone risk from January to March.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly to Cairns with one stop, usually via Singapore or Brisbane, about 10–13 hours all in. Port Douglas is about an hour north along the coast road. Queensland is 2 hours ahead of KL all year.

Port Douglas is a small, palm-lined town built around reef trips and slow afternoons. It's closer to the outer Great Barrier Reef than Cairns, with Mossman Gorge and the Daintree within easy reach.

Good to know
- Reef boats give snorkel briefings and lend flotation vests, so first-timers are fine.
- From November to May, swim inside the stinger net at Four Mile Beach.
- Halal options in town are limited, so ask the reef boat about a halal lunch when booking; Cairns has more choice.
