phu quoc in 4 days, 3 nights

Sunset and the night market on arrival, the Hon Thom cable car and Sao Beach in the south, a boat day around the An Thoi islands, and a fish sauce house before the flight home.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive and the night market

    Morning
Fly direct from KL, about 2 hours; Vietnam is an hour behind Malaysia. Check in on the west coast near Duong Dong, about 15 minutes from the airport.
    Lunch
Gỏi cá trích, the island's raw herring salad with coconut and herbs, rolled in rice paper.
    Afternoon
A slow afternoon by the pool or the beach, then watch the sun set over the sea from the west coast.
    Evening
The night market in Duong Dong, for scallops, squid and sea urchin grilled to order.
  2. Day 2

    Cable car and Sao Beach

    Morning
Drive south to An Thoi, about 45 minutes, and ride the Hon Thom cable car, one of the world's longest over the sea, out to Hon Thom island.
    Lunch
Lunch on Hon Thom or back in An Thoi.
    Afternoon
Cross to Sao Beach on the southeast coast, about 20 minutes, for white sand and calm, clear water.
    Evening
Back to the west coast for dinner near the hotel.
  3. Day 3

    An Thoi islands

    Morning
A boat trip around the An Thoi islands off the south coast, for snorkelling and quiet beaches. Most tours pick you up from the hotel.
    Lunch
Lunch on the boat or on one of the islands.
    Afternoon
Back to the hotel to rest.
    Evening
Sunset on the west coast, then the night market again or dinner near the hotel.
  4. Day 4

    Fish sauce and home

    Morning
Bún kèn for breakfast, rice noodles in a fish and coconut milk broth. Then visit a fish sauce house near Duong Dong to see the giant wooden barrels.
    Lunch
An early lunch near the hotel.
    Afternoon
Head to the airport, a short drive, and fly home.

Good to know

  • If you're bringing fish sauce home, buy sealed bottles packed for flying and check your airline's rules.
  • The island is bigger than it looks. Use a ride-hailing app or hire a car and driver for Day 2.
  • Come between November and April for calm seas. Boat trips can be cancelled when the southwest monsoon makes the water rough.
