Mumbai runs on local trains, street snacks and the evening crowd along the sea. The old south of the city packs Victorian Gothic stations, Art Deco blocks and crowded bazaars into a few square kilometres.

- Marine DriveThe curving seafront promenade, where half the city seems to sit on the sea wall after dark.Map ↗

Good to know
- Colaba or Fort is the base for the old city; a hotel near the airport means long taxi rides every day.
- Mohammed Ali Road and the lanes around Minara Masjid are full of Muslim-run restaurants and kebab stalls, busiest in Ramadan. Elsewhere, vegetarian Udupi and Gujarati places are everywhere.
- Local trains are packed at rush hour, so a mid-morning ride is the gentle introduction. Every train has ladies' carriages.
