May–June and September are mild and good for walking. The Montreux Jazz Festival fills the town for two weeks in July, and December brings a big Christmas market along the lake; January–February is quiet.

Montreux is the Swiss Riviera: a flowery lakeside promenade with palm trees, the Alps across the water and a castle on a rock just along the shore. It's a slow, easy place for walks, boat trips and mountain trains.

Good to know

  • Sit on the right on the train from Geneva for lake views most of the way.
  • Book early for jazz festival week, when the town's hotels fill up.
  • Lebanese and Turkish places in town are the easiest bet for halal food; pack a picnic for Rochers-de-Naye.
