- Best time
- December–March has the best beach weather and calm seas, and November–April is whale-watching season, with blue whales offshore. May–October brings rain, swell and fewer boat trips.
- How long

Mirissa is a curved sandy bay on the south coast, with a fishing harbour at one end and small guesthouses tucked into the palms. It's the lazy part of a Sri Lanka trip: beach days, seafood dinners on the sand and early boats out to look for whales.

Good to know
- Weligama, next door, has a large Muslim community and halal restaurants; the beach places in Mirissa serve mixed menus.
- Currents vary across the bay, and a red flag means stay out.
- Whale trips are a long, sometimes rough morning at sea, and the better operators keep their distance from the whales.
