mayon volcano
Near-perfect volcanic cone, best framed from the Cagsawa Ruins.
- Best time
- March to May tends to be driest, with the best chance of a clear summit. Bicol is often hit by typhoons later in the year, and cloud can hide the peak, so go out early in the morning.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- Fly KL to Manila (about 4 hours), then about an hour to Bicol International Airport in Daraga, a short drive from Legazpi. Overnight buses from Manila take 10 hours or more.

The Philippines' most active volcano rises over Albay province in Bicol, famous for its almost perfectly symmetrical cone. Most visitors don't climb it, but admire it from the ruins, hills and lakes around Legazpi. Albay's spicy, coconut-rich Bicolano cooking is the other reason to come.

Good to know
- Mayon is active, with a permanent danger zone around the summit. Check PHIVOLCS alert levels before you go, as areas close when activity rises.
- A lot of Bicolano cooking uses pork. Halal options are limited, so ask before ordering.
