East Java's second city sits about 450 metres up, so it's much cooler than Surabaya. It has Dutch-era streets and churches, brightly painted kampungs, and it's the usual base for Bromo sunrise trips and the theme parks of Batu next door.

  • Bromo tours pick you up around midnight. Sleep early and pack warm clothes.
  • Weekend traffic between Malang and Batu is heavy. Go on a weekday if you can.
