kurashiki
Willow-lined canals, white storehouses and denim shops in an old trading town.
- Best time
- March–May and October–November suit wandering the canal district. July–August is hot and humid; winter has quieter streets and crisp evenings.
- How long
- 1 day, or 1 night
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Osaka Kansai (about 6.5 hours). Take the shinkansen to Okayama (about 45 minutes), then a local train to Kurashiki (about 15 minutes). Japan is an hour ahead of KL.

An old rice-trading town whose canal district keeps its white-walled storehouses, willows and stone bridges. Small museums and craft shops fill the old warehouses, and the lanes are at their best after the day-trippers leave.

Good to know
- Stay a night to see the canal lit up and quiet in the evening.
- Kojima is a separate train or bus trip, not a walk from the canal.
