Yunnan's capital is nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring for its mild weather all year, thanks to sitting at about 1,900 metres. It's a relaxed, leafy city by Dian Lake and the usual starting point for trips to Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La.

Good to know
- Only eat wild mushrooms at proper restaurants and make sure they're fully cooked. Some are toxic if undercooked.
- The sun is strong at altitude. Bring sunscreen and a jacket for cool evenings.
- Most places expect Alipay or WeChat Pay. Link your card to one before you fly and keep some cash as a backup.
