Kandersteg is a quiet village at the head of the Kander valley, ringed by limestone walls. Most people come for Oeschinen Lake, a turquoise lake under cliffs and hanging glaciers, but the valley floor has gentle walks too.

Good to know
- Book the Oeschinen gondola ahead in summer; a rail pass doesn't reserve you a time slot.
- Some paths around the lake are closed because of rockfall risk from the Spitze Stei above; follow the signs on site.
- Halal meat is hard to find in the village; bring a picnic from Bern or Interlaken.
