Timber Malay houses, tiled front steps and a lived-in kampung on a bend of the Melaka River.
- Best time
- Any time of year. Come in the morning while it's cool, or at dusk when the village lights come on and the river cruise boats slide past.
- How long
- Half a day, with Kampung Chetti
- Getting there
- About 2 hours' drive from KL. From Jonker Street it's a 10–15 minute walk upriver along the riverside path, and the Melaka River cruise passes right by.

Kampung Morten is a Malay village of more than a hundred timber houses tucked into a bend of the Melaka River, a short walk upriver from the old town. Families still live here, so it's a quiet wander past raised houses, tiled front steps and potted plants, with one home open as a museum.

Things to do
- Villa SentosaA 1920s family home turned private museum, full of old furniture, photos and heirlooms. The family shows you round and asks for a donation rather than a ticket.Map ↗
- The village lanesLook for raised timber houses, carved panels and the colourful tiled stairs that Melaka Malay homes are known for.Map ↗
- The river at nightThe houses and the footbridge are lit up after dark. Watch from the riverside path on the opposite bank.Map ↗
- Kampung ChettiFive minutes' drive west on Jalan Gajah Berang, the village of the Chitty, Melaka's Indian Peranakan community, has a small museum and the Sri Muthu Mariamman temple from 1822.Map ↗
Good to know
- These are people's homes. Keep to the lanes, ask before photographing anyone, and don't climb onto the steps for a photo.
- Pair it with the river cruise: see the village from the water first, then walk it.
