kampong glam

Sultan Mosque, Haji Lane boutiques and nasi padang along Arab Street.

Best time
Hot and humid all year, so late afternoon into evening is the nicest time to wander. It gets especially lively in the evenings during Ramadan.
How long
Half a day
Getting there
From JB, cross the Causeway by bus or train, then take the MRT to Bugis station, a short walk away. From KL, it's about an hour's flight to Changi, or about 5–6 hours by coach including the border.

Singapore's old Malay-Muslim quarter, just north of the Singapore River in Rochor. The golden-domed Sultan Mosque sits at its centre, surrounded by shophouse lanes full of textile shops, cafés, Middle Eastern restaurants and murals. It's also one of the easiest places in Singapore to find Muslim food.

Good to know

  • Dress modestly for the Sultan Mosque. Robes are provided at the entrance, and the mosque closes to visitors during prayers, including Friday midday.
  • Not every café here is halal-certified. Look for the MUIS certificate if it matters to you.
