jasper national park

Glacier-fed lakes, broad mountain valleys and quieter corners of the Canadian Rockies.

Best time
June–September have the best choice of lake trips and walks. Winter is cold and snowy, with skiing at Marmot Basin and very dark skies; spring and late autumn have fewer services.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly to Calgary with one stop via Tokyo or Seoul, or to Edmonton with two, about 20–25 hours all in. Jasper town is about 4 hours by car from Edmonton, or a full day's sightseeing drive from Banff along the Icefields Parkway. Alberta is 14 hours behind KL, 15 from November to early March. Malaysians need a Canadian visitor visa, or just an eTA if flying in with a valid US visa or a Canadian visa held in the last 10 years.

Jasper is the quieter, wilder end of the Canadian Rockies: wide valleys, glacier-fed lakes and elk wandering through town. The town and park are open again after the 2024 wildfire, though the burnt forest is plain to see and a few places remain closed.

Things to do

  2. Athabasca FallsThe river squeezes through a narrow rock gorge with a roar, just off the Parkway.Map ↗
  3. Columbia IcefieldThe Athabasca Glacier comes down almost to the road at the park's southern edge.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Maligne Canyon and Edith Cavell Road stay closed through 2026 after the fire; most other trails have reopened.
  • Fill up before the Icefields Parkway; there's one fuel stop and little phone signal along the way.
  • There's no halal in Jasper, so bring supplies from Edmonton or Calgary.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
