Hyderabad is a city to plan around meals. Biryani and Irani chai fill the gaps between the old city's bazaars, the Nizams' palaces and the granite walls of Golconda Fort.

Good to know

  • Halal is easy here: most of the famous biryani houses and Irani cafés are Muslim-run, especially in the old city.
  • Golconda is best first thing, before the heat, with the Qutb Shahi Tombs nearby on the same trip.
  • Pearl shops sell cultured, freshwater and glass beads side by side, so ask what you're buying.
