Climb South Korea's highest peak to a crater lake. Snowy trails in winter.

Best time
Late spring brings azaleas and October brings autumn colours. From December to February the mountain is under snow, which is beautiful but needs crampons. Summer is rainy and typhoons can close the trails.
How long
A full day for the summit
Getting there
Fly from KL to Jeju, usually with a connection in Seoul or Busan; the domestic hop takes about an hour. Buses from Jeju City reach the main trailheads in about 30 to 50 minutes.

The shield volcano at the heart of Jeju Island and, at 1,947 m, South Korea's highest peak. The summit holds a crater lake, Baengnokdam, and the mountain is part of Jeju's UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Reaching the top is a long but straightforward day hike.

Things to do

  1. Seongpanak TrailThe longest but gentlest route to the summit, through forest most of the way.Map ↗
  2. Gwaneumsa TrailSteeper and more scenic, with views into deep valleys. Many people go up Seongpanak and come down this way.Map ↗
  3. Yeongsil TrailA shorter trail past tall rock pillars to the Witse-oreum plateau. It doesn't reach the summit but gives big views for the effort.Map ↗
  4. Eorimok TrailAnother shorter route up to Witse-oreum, through forest and open highland.Map ↗
  5. BaengnokdamThe summit crater lake. It's often only partly filled with water, so don't expect a full lake.Map ↗

Good to know

  • The two summit trails, Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa, need an online booking made in advance.
  • Start early. There are cut-off times at the checkpoints and you'll be turned back if you miss them.
  • No food is sold on the trails. Carry water, snacks and warm layers, and take your rubbish back down.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
