Rebuilt Baroque squares, riverside terraces and art treasures beside the Elbe.
- Best time
- May–June and September are best for river walks. December brings the Striezelmarkt, one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets; January–February is cold and dark early, but the museums make up for it.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Berlin or Prague, usually via Doha, Istanbul or Frankfurt, about 15–17 hours all in. Trains from either city take about 2 hours. Germany is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Dresden was flattened in 1945 and has spent the decades since rebuilding its Baroque centre along the Elbe, domes, palaces and all. Across the river, Neustadt is younger and scruffier, with cafés, bars and courtyards.

Good to know
- Book the Historic Green Vault ahead for a timed slot; the New Green Vault upstairs is a separate ticket.
- Turkish kebab shops are the easiest halal option; traditional Saxon cooking leans on pork.
