Revolutionary history, harbour walks, university courtyards and New England seafood.

Best time
May–June and September–October are comfortable for walking, with autumn colour in October. Summer is busy and can be humid; January–February bring heavy snow and freezing wind.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop, usually via Tokyo, Seoul or Hong Kong, about 21–25 hours all in. The Silver Line bus or the Blue Line train gets you downtown in about 20–30 minutes. Boston is 12 hours behind KL, 13 from November to early March. Malaysians need a US B1/B2 visitor visa, usually with an interview at the embassy in KL; ESTA isn't open to Malaysian passports.

Boston is a compact, walkable city of red-brick streets and harbour views, where the American Revolution began. Cambridge is just across the river, with Harvard, MIT and good bookshops for a second day.

Good to know

  • Halal is spread across Boston and Cambridge, mostly at Middle Eastern and South Asian places, many of them near the universities.
  • Walk the Freedom Trail in two halves; the full route with stops inside takes most of a day.
