Good to know
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your card before you go. Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks, so sort out roaming or an eSIM from home.
- Carry your passport every day. You'll need it for tickets, trains and security checks.
- The Summer Palace's lakeside gardens are on the far side of the city, so add a day rather than squeezing them in.
