Handmade pasta in old-town lanes, thick focaccia and a long Adriatic seafront.
- Best time
- April–June and September–October are warm, good for the old town and the coast. July–August is hot and busy; winter is mild but can be wet and windy.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Bari, usually via Istanbul, about 16–18 hours all in, or connect through Rome. The airport train reaches Bari Centrale in about 20 minutes. Italy is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Puglia's capital is a working port with an old town, Bari Vecchia, where women still make orecchiette by hand in the lanes. It's also the easy base for the trulli, Matera and the white towns along the coast.

Things to do

Good to know
- Trains to Alberobello leave from the Sud Est platforms at Bari Centrale, and trains to Matera from the separate FAL station next door.
- The orecchiette sold on Arco Basso is uncooked, so buy it to take home.
- Halal meat is limited to a few kebab and South Asian places, but focaccia, panzerotti and seafood make easy meals.
