anchorage

Coastal cycling, Alaska Native culture and day trips along glacier-backed inlets.

Best time
June–August have up to 19 hours of daylight and the full choice of trips and tours. September brings autumn colour and colder nights; November–March are dark and snowy, better for the aurora and winter tours.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
Fly with two stops, usually via Seoul, Taipei or Tokyo and then Seattle, about 22–27 hours all in. The airport is 15 minutes from downtown. Anchorage is 16 hours behind KL, 17 from November to early March. Malaysians need a US B1/B2 visitor visa, usually with an interview at the embassy in KL; ESTA isn't open to Malaysian passports.

Anchorage is Alaska's big city, with mountains on one side, a wide tidal inlet on the other and the odd moose in the parks. It's the start of most Alaska trips, with enough culture and coast for a couple of days.

Makan

Things to do

  1. Tony Knowles Coastal TrailA paved trail along the inlet from downtown, with mountain views and the occasional moose. Good on a hire bike.Map ↗
  2. Alaska Native Heritage CenterDance, crafts and full-size traditional houses from Alaska's Native peoples.Map ↗
  3. Turnagain ArmThe Seward Highway south hugs the inlet below the mountains; look out for beluga whales and Dall sheep.Map ↗
  4. Anchorage MuseumAlaska's art, history and Native cultures under one roof, a good start to the trip.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Stay off the mudflats along Turnagain Arm; the mud acts like quicksand and the tide comes in fast.
  • Halal is limited to a few places in Anchorage, so stock up there before heading out of town.
  • Book a hire car early for summer, by far the busiest season.
