amalfi coast
Clifftop villages, lemon terraces and ferry rides past houses stacked above the sea.
- Best time
- May–June and September–October are warm, with ferries running and the sea good for swimming. July–August is hot and the coast road jams with traffic; in winter most ferries stop and many hotels and restaurants close.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Naples, usually via Istanbul or Dubai, about 16–18 hours all in. Amalfi is about 1.5–2 hours by road from Naples airport, or take the train to Salerno and a ferry along the coast in season. Italy is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

A run of steep towns clinging to the cliffs south of Naples, joined by one narrow, winding road and, in season, by ferries. Positano has the famous view, Amalfi the harbour and cathedral, and Ravello the gardens high above both.

Good to know
- In summer, the ferries between Salerno, Amalfi and Positano beat the coast road, where buses fill up and traffic crawls.
- Positano and Ravello are all steps, so pack light.
- Halal meat is rare along the coast, but seafood pasta, pizza and lemon desserts cover most meals.
